My little poll is hardly representative, but for the two people who said they think it's meant for people to post images without credit, here's a sample of what deviantArt gives you to put in your livejournal with that option:

That's it. Thumbnail link back to your image, with your name right under it. I tend to remove all the text, because I rather post a compact batch of thumbnails rather than a long, narrow column, but the whole point is linking to your work.
