Yes, I'm grumpy

Thu Aug 7, 2008, 2:23 AM
Please do NOT leave "thanks for the fav" comments!

I collect a lot of images, and it's very disappointing supposedly having X new comments, but all of them turn out to be some copied or at least generic "thank you" message.

You know what I do when someone favs an image of mine?

I look at their gallery. I don't always leave a comment or fav in return, that would be insincere, but I look.

Whereas anyone who leaves a copypasted "thanks for the fav" is too wrapped up in themselves - in the case of people who link back to their deviation, too wrapped up in the obsession with promoting themselves for sure - to have a look at my page. Which included a "please don't thank me for favs" stamp. Maybe this will help. *point at the top of the journal*

Why I don't like it?

Simple. I come here, message centre says "5 new comments", I check, and each of them is an absolutely pointless, generic, "Thanks for the fav". They're a waste of time and server space.

I occasionally thank for favs, but usually only if I've had a chance to check out the person's gallery and comment on a few things.

I don't like that my profile page gets flooded with generic messages. :-/

I even contacted helpdesk to ask if there was a way to switch off comments on the main page to avoid that spam. Unfortunately, there isn't.

I agree. I don't thank people for faves anymore, unless I have at least something else to say about their gallery. I know most people are just trying to be nice, but it's an unnecessary gesture.

I know what you mean.

Now, honestly, I don't think there's anything wrong on principal with saying "thank you"--what I hate is when people are like "now check out the rest of my gallery." I just gave you a fav, how do you know I wasn't looking at your gallery, right? But I like thanking people for favs, it just feels right to me, however...

I can see clearly, right at the top of your page, that you ask people not to leave those sorts of comments, and in the end that ought to be respected. :)

Yea, I guess I'm just having a grumpy day. I'm pretty sure I'll get rid of that huge note once I'm caught up with the owls

Well.. I am afraid I disagree to a point with this. I do say thank you for every fave I receive because its a polite thing to do. I dont always have the time to comment every single time. The people I do get faves off are on my friends list anyways so any new deviations they post I see without going to their gallery. Only new people that havent commented on mine.. or fave any of mine I check out the gallery.
In my opinion saying thank for a fave is just plain polite. But well thats just me. If someone gave you a compliment in real life you just wouldnt ignore that person either.. you would say thank you and I dont see how on here it should be different xxx

This is kinda why I only just joined DA. It's a self-promotion social network. Oh yeah and there's art.
There's a large percentage of users who aren't artists and just post snap shots they took with friends and watch artists' work.

I basically joined up for friends and for visibility (because my site is under construction).
Now, I don't spam my friends much, unless I just added them and I want them to know I'm here.
but strangers? I don't know them, and yes I like their art, but it's also about making connections and being seen.

I agree with you whole heartedly, but I'm afraid the internet filled with it's shallow narcissists and approval seeking trolls will always let you and me down.

I think I'm boiling it down (da) into a simple machine because there isn't the high critique that an artistic community should have. If it's not "thanks fo r the fav and nothing" it's "oooh, I like it" and nothing else.

I haven't yet gotten a negative reaction, but my stuff doesn't really push the envelope.

Oh well. I hope the silly people don't get to you, and I hope I didn't annoy you. I now how it is to be grumpy and people post like the opposite of what you want to hear.

Nah, 's a well-reasoned comment, not annoying. :)

I'm sure it'll get better once I've taken care of the backlog of owl deviations... (See, I check the entire search that comes up when looking for "owl" and collect pretty much everything I like there, and I just cut the backlog by several hundred down to 2000 deviations to go.)

I understand what do you mean.

I'm one of those who thanks when someone favs my works. I look at their galleries and try to write something nice about it too. If I have time I return favor by commenting their works.

I don't thank my friends faving my works because I already know what there are in their galleries. So thanking strangers is also message that I have visited their pages. It is also nice to see what kind of people like my works and fav them! :D

I'm quite picky with my favorites so I appreciate if someone whos work I have faved come to my pages and leaves a message. But if I would fav tons of works it would be really annoying to get thanks from everyone of them.

So, I don't mind to get thanked or if someone decides not to thank. (I fav works because I like them not to get more pageviews for myself. ;P)

But I agree that it isn't necassary to get front page messages to your message centre... Before people who don't like thanks could just ignore them - now they need atleast remove them from message centre.

Ok, now I have wrote too long already... interesting subject.
